Taskforce created to help Tesco call centre staff

A taskforce has been created by the Welsh Government in a bid to help find Tesco call centre workers new jobs.

Up to 1,100 jobs are set to go at Tesco’s Maes-Y-Coed Road, Cardiff call centre.

Economy Secretary Ken Skates said the taskforce would involve key players “gathered around one table” and would be set up very quickly.

“I’ve been very clear about my deep disappointment over the proposed closure of this award winning Customer Contact Centre in Cardiff and also about the way this news was broken to staff,” said Skates.

“Wales has a well-established support infrastructure in place for workers who are affected by redundancy and at times like this when one organisation is proposing to cut a high number of jobs, it is really helpful to get all the key players around one table so we can discuss the best and innovative ways of supporting affected workers.

“This is a tried and tested approach as demonstrated by the success of a similar taskforce to support employees affected by the closure of the Murco site in Pembrokeshire and will ensure close partnership working with agencies, including Jobcentre plus and Careers Wales, Cardiff Council and our flagship ReAct 3 programme.

“We are talking here about a highly employable, award winning workforce who I’m sure many companies in the area would be very keen to employ.

“I’m determined to do everything I can, working alongside our partners, to ensure that the impact of the potential closure on our workers and wider economy is kept to an absolute minimum

Tesco consolidates Cardiff call centre jobs

Tesco has confirmed that up to 1,100 jobs could be lost at its call centre in Cardiff.

The supermarket giant said it was consolidating its customer engagement centres (CEC) into a single site in Dundee, where around 250 jobs will be created. Workers from the Cardiff area will be offered work at the Dundee site. The Cardiff centre will close in February.

Matt Davies, UK chief executive of Tesco, said: “The retail sector is facing unprecedented challenges and we must ensure we run our business in a sustainable and cost-effective way, while meeting the changing needs of our customers.

“To help us achieve this, we’ve taken the difficult decision to close our customer service operations in Cardiff.

“We realise this will have a significant effect on colleagues in the Cardiff area, and our priority now is to continue to do all we can to support them at this time.”

First Minister Carwyn Jones had spoken to Davies and “expressed my concern about the proposals”. Jones also confirmed that there would be help available to those affected by the closure.

Welsh Secretary Alun Cairns said he understood it was a “commercial decision for Tesco” but the news “will cause a great deal of concern” to workers”.

He said he was “committed to working with relevant agencies, local authorities and the Welsh Government”.
