Speech reasoning models and AI context platforms among key technology trends for 2027

Advances in voice AI, contextual intelligence and autonomous systems could be set to reshape customer service technology in 2027, according to Gartner’s latest strategic technology trends report.

Unveiled at Gartner IT Symposium/Xpo 2026, the research identifies ten technologies that organisations should explore over the coming year, with several carrying significant implications for contact centre operations.

Among the most relevant are speech reasoning models, which enable voice AI systems to interpret audio directly, track conversational context and understand intent before determining an appropriate response.

Gartner suggests the technology could address longstanding limitations in customer support automation, particularly when handling complex interactions that require greater judgement and contextual understanding.

Gene Alvarez, Distinguished VP Analyst at Gartner, said: “Voice remains the enterprise’s highest-volume interaction channel, but even a decade of customer support automation has failed to deliver the accuracy, speed and resolution rates enterprise deployment demands.”

AI context platforms are another emerging priority, providing autonomous agents with the organisational knowledge needed to interpret information, make decisions and act in accordance with business objectives.

Gartner predicts that by 2027, organisations prioritising contextual meaning within AI-ready data could improve agentic AI accuracy by up to 80% and reduce costs by up to 60%.

For contact centres, these capabilities could support more accurate automated responses, improved customer journeys and better integration between AI systems and existing business processes.

However, Gartner also highlights the growing security and governance challenges associated with increasingly autonomous AI.

Its research predicts that by 2028, 25% of enterprise security breaches will be linked to AI agent abuse, driven by unmanaged access privileges and outdated credential practices.

The report identifies AI agent identity as a critical emerging technology, enabling organisations to apply dynamic access controls and establish clearer accountability for actions performed by autonomous systems.

Other trends include autonomous exposure remediation, which uses AI to identify and address security vulnerabilities, and sovereign technology designed to reduce dependence on individual suppliers.

The findings highlight the potential for more sophisticated customer service automation, alongside the need to strengthen governance, data quality and security as AI takes on increasingly complex responsibilities.

Gartner argues that organisations must move beyond simply adopting new AI capabilities towards establishing clear boundaries between human decision-making, autonomous systems and enterprise technology infrastructure.
